Why do you stick to the DOS version? Better grab the Windows version "Z Expansion Kit" - it does not require any DOS-emulators, have additional 15 single play levels, have TCP/IP network protocol support and have interesting mod, which allows to play the game in SVGA and XGA screen resolutions. Hope this helps.

There is probably something wrong with your disc? Dust oder dirt or scratches on it? Try copyying all files onto harddisk and install it from there (simply mount this folder as a disc-drive in dosbox).
